HISTORY
Eileen was born in Galway to a very poor family.  For generations, the Mullens were fishermen, but when Brian Mullen came of age, he decided he was going to make a name for himself by doing something different and opened up a pub.  Unfortunately, Brian knew little about managing a business, and the pub business was not that much more lucrative than the fishing business.  The Flying Barrel barely brought in enough money to stay open, and Brian Mullens was barely able to feed himself.  Still, that was not enough to stop him from marrying his sweetheart and starting a family.

The four Mullen children were born fairly close together.  First Margaret, then James two years later, then Eileen one year later, and then Elizabeth two years later.  Each new child was a strain on The Flying Barrell's limited income.  Much to the displeasure of Mrs. Mullen, Brian saw an opportunity to bring in a bit more money by tacitly encouraging illicit activities in his pub.  Mrs. Mullens reacted by making an extra effort to instill good moral values in her children and enforcing strict rules.

Growing up, Eileen was never really aware that her family was poor.  She though that the life she lived was perfectly normal, that everyone's parents worked themselves to the bones, and that everyone wore worn out hand me down clothes.  After all, that was what it was like for nearly everyone she knew. Eileen began working the pub at the age of fifteen, just doing simple things like waiting tables and socializing with the patrons.  It was then that she was finally exposed to wider variety of people.  Yes, most of them were penniless drunk, but occasionally a wealthy traveler (often of the seedier variety) would visit.  Eileen was especially fascinated by these people, and meeting them made her realize just how little her family had, and she began to long for something better.  One long conversation with a  well-traveled patron gave her the foolish idea that she should run away to Paris and start a new life.  Eileen never told anyone about her crazy idea.

Life went on for two more years.  Eileen still held on to her Parisian dream, but she gave up hope that it would ever come true.  When she was seventeen, her older sister married the best catch that she could get: a man who was still poor, unattractive, and dreadfully boring.  Eileen realized then that Galway had little left to offer, and her old dream began to preoccupy her thoughts.  She had her heart set on Paris, and she was willing to do anything to get there, including stealing money from her family, picking pockets, and sexual favors.

Once in Paris, Eileen set her heart on singing in the Opera Garnier.  Unfortunately, her limited talent only let her get so far as the seedier dance halls.  One year later, Eileen is still sure that she has it in her to become a prima donna; she just hasn't had the right opportunity yet.

PERSONALITY
Eileen is naive and delusional.  Her heart is set on an impossible dream, and her head is so far off in the clouds that she thinks it's well within her reach.  Her view on her current situation as a performer in a seedy establishment is a bit skewed.  She sees it as a necessary stepping stone on her way to the opera, and she has managed to convince herself that the male audience is entertained solely by her talent and not her shapely ankles.  Eileen lives in a hopeless dream world where the life of a poor Irish dancer is glamorous, cat calls are innocent applause, and sin is forgivable if it helps one get ahead.

Eileen is still the devout Catholic her mother raised her to be, even though most aspects of her lifestyle go against her moral beliefs.  However, she rarely regrets her actions and has a twisted way of justifying her sins: God wants her to sing in the opera one day, and it just so happens that the path is littered with moral dilemmas.  She makes a point of praying, going to church, andconfessing her sins when she can find the time.
